Plastic
surgery often conjures up the image of glamour, procedures
like Botox or restylane injections and most recently reality
TV shows. That stated reconstructive plastic surgery is medically
indicated surgery to improve or restore the appearance and/or
function to any area of the body. In oculoplastic surgery
this often translates into fixing drooping eyelids (ptosis)
that interfere with vision, reconstructing eyelids, cheeks,
brows or foreheads after the removal of skin cancers and much
more. All these procedures are medically indicated and paid
for by your insurance. Reconstructive surgery may be required
for children with birth defects of the eye or face as well
as patients who have sustained trauma to the eyes, face or
orbit.
The most common reconstructive procedures treated by oculoplastic
surgeons include:
- Eyelid problems (ptosis, ectropion, entropion, lid retraction)
- Orbital problems (trauma, fractures, infection, tumors)
- Tearing surgery
- Skin cancer removal and reconstruction in the periocular
area
- Removal of diseased eye (enucleation, evisceration)
- Reconstruction of eye socket after loss of an eye
