The eyelids are small but delicate structures
integral to protecting and maintaining the health of the eye.
A variety of problems can involve the eyelids and oculo-facial
plastic surgeons are quite skilled in addressing these issues
as they arise. Tricounty Eye’s oculoplastic surgeon, Scott
M. Goldstein, MD has extensive experience treating eyelid
disorders.
Congenital Eyelid Problems
One of the more common eyelid problems seen in newborns
is a droopy eyelid. Ptosis can occur from a birth injury or
more often, poor function of the muscle that lifts the eyelid.
If the droopy eyelid is interfering with vision, it is critical
for the eyelid to be opened as soon a possible to avoid a
lazy eye. If it is drooping but not significantly interfering
with vision, surgery to lift the eyelid can be delayed until
around age one or sometimes even later in life.
Hemangiomas are overgrowths of blood vessels in the skin
and soft tissues which typically show up in the first few
weeks of life. They tend to grow rapidly and can have a major
impact on vision when hey occur around the eye. Patients with
hemangiomas around the eye should be closely followed and
sometimes require medical or surgical treatment. Dr. Goldstein’s
experience at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia make
him one of the most experienced ophthalmologists in the Bucks
county and Philadelphia area for these problems.
Other birth defects and craniofacial syndromes can effect
the eyes and face, often requiring complicated treatment and
follow up. Our full time pediatric ophthalmology team of Drs
Menacker and Goldstein are poised to help in these cases.
Eyelids and Aging
As
we age, the skin thins out, tissue stretches and sags and
the soft tissue looses volume. Often the first place this
becomes apparent is in the eyelids. Heavy upper eyelids (ptosis)
may interfere with vision, and if they do, insurance companies
will often pay for surgery to lift the lids. Lost of elasticity
of the skin and sagging, baggy eyelids can also be treated.
Lower eyelid surgery can help rejuvenate your appearance and
is a common cosmetic surgical procedure. The same is true
of the upper eyelid as well. Dr. Goldstein is available for
consultation to discuss a variety of eye lid plastic surgery
procedures like blepharoplasty. Of note, the upper eyelid
is in continuity with the eyebrow and the lower lid is in
continuity with the cheek. In both these cases, brow lifts
or cheek lifts may be needed to obtain the best result possible
when sculpting the eyelids.
In addition to drooping and sagging problems as the eyelids
age, they can often turn in towards the eye(entropion) or
turn away from the eye (ectropion). Dr Goldstein is skilled
in treating these eyelid malpositions when they occur.
Eyelid Skin lesions and Skin Cancer
The skin is a very active organ in the body and is susceptible
to a variety of conditions. A range of problems from benign
warts and styes to malignant lesions like basal cell carcinoma
can occur on the eyelids. Sometimes, only a biopsy can be
done to make the correct diagnosis. As an ophthalmologist
and plastic surgeon, Dr Goldstein is best qualified to evaluate
and remove irritating or suspicious lesions on or near the
eyelids. In addition, as an oculo-facial plastic surgeon,
lesions elsewhere on the face can be treated too.
