You have been prescribed RESTASIS®
Ophthalmic Emulsion, a prescription therapy for dry eye patients
clinically shown to increase production of one’s own
natural tears. RESTASIS® Ophthalmic Emulsion is both an
artificial tear which treats your symptoms for short term
relief of persistent dry eye and a special medicine which
works, with proper compliance, to increase
both quantity and quality of your own natural
tear production in the long term. RESTASIS® Ophthalmic
Emulsion can actually help you restore the production of your
own natural tears – something that an artificial
tear alone cannot do by itself.
You may choose to continue using artificial tears between
doses of RESTASIS® for temporary relief of your dry eye
symptoms. Over time, however, you may find that you need these
less often, if at all.
RESTASIS®
should be used as follows:
1 drop in each eye,
2 times per day, 12 hours apart.

What you should expect with RESTASIS® therapy:
- 0 – 6 weeks: it is typical to
note some improvement in signs and symptoms such as dryness,
itching, blurred vision late in the day and sensitivity
to light. Not all patients respond as quickly as others
and proper compliance with twice a day dosing is critical
to resolution of dry eye symptoms. Improvement can also
be dependent upon the severity of your dry eye disease or
dysfunctional tear syndrome. DO NOT DISCONTINUE
USE WITHOUT CONSULTING YOUR DOCTOR!
- 6 weeks – 3 months: key signs
and symptoms will continue to improve with less reliance
on artificial tears.
- 3 – 6 months: improvement of symptoms
and clinical signs maintained with continued therapy.
You may experience a stinging sensation when instilling RESTASIS®.
This is common in 1 out of 6 patients. This should go away
with continued use over time. Refrigerating your RESTASIS®
or using artificial tears 15 minutes before RESTASIS®
may ease this temporary discomfort.
